Practitioner Youth

The Practice Support Physician Youth (POH Jeugd) offers psychological and socio-emotional help to children and adolescents aged 0 to 18. The POH Jeugd & Gezin specialises in analysing parenting and developmental issues. Thanks to specific knowledge and experience, the POH knows exactly what problems children and the family may be facing and can call in appropriate help.

You, as a parent, or your child can contact the POH Youth for:

  • Developmental and behavioural concerns
  • Questions in parenting
  • Situations where you experience problems as a parent yourself
  • Stress, irritability and anger
  • Anxiety or gloom
  • Compulsive thoughts
  • Complaints with no obvious medical cause
  • Problems with difficult situations
  • Dealing with being bullied
  • Sleep problems
  • Problems with (fighting) divorce
  • Addiction problems

The POH Jeugd discusses with your child and/or with you how your child is doing. Then, together we look at whether short-term guidance by the POH Jeugd is possible. For children 12 years and older, there is the possibility of (partial) support through the eHealth programme Minddistrict. It is also possible that help from another agency is more appropriate. In the latter case, the POH Jeugd will arrange a referral together with the GP.

If necessary and desired, the GP and POH Youth collaborate with other healthcare providers such as the youth doctor, specialised mental health services, schools and youth assistance from the municipality.

What steps can you follow if there are questions or concerns about your child from school?

The POH Jeugd can think along with parents if there are signals from school that there are concerns about your child's behaviour and/or learning abilities. In principle, schools follow their own protocols and, if necessary, they can also involve agencies that can think along with them and the family. It may happen that school asks for a referral through the GP. When this is the case, parents can immediately schedule an appointment with the POH Jeugd . He or she will first discuss the request for help and consider whether this is the right and most effective route. If additional information is needed, the POH Jeugd can contact the school in question and the municipal youth worker who is also linked to the school.
