Wound care after surgery at the GP's office

Instructions after surgery at GP:

• Keep the wound dry as much as possible for the first 24 hours.
• You may change the plaster yourself, but leave any white adhesive strips (star strips) in place; these support wound healing and may come off on their own or be removed by the GP.
• Sutures are removed after 7 to 10 days in most cases. If you do not yet have an appointment for this, please contact the practice to schedule one.

When should you get in touch?

Contact the practice if the wound starts to bleed (again). In that case, first try to keep the spot still and press the wound firmly with a dressing gauze for at least 10 minutes. Do not stop the bleeding, repeat this one more time. Does the wound continue to bleed? Call the practice or, outside office hours, the GP out-of-hours service via 020 – 456 2000.

It is also important to get in touch if the wound shows signs of inflammation. Watch for signs such as increasing redness, swelling, pain or the onset of fever after a few days.

Results of tissue examination

If tissue has been sent for examination, you can find the results after about two weeks in YourZorgOnline, under My File > Letters/references. Do you still not see a rash after this period? Then contact the practice.
