Whether you receive patients, perform medical procedures or process an enquiry from the GP, as a doctor's assistant you play an important role in making sure the day-to-day running of the GP practice runs smoothly. Wondering what your working day looks like? Read on quickly.
At 8:00 am, the practice opens. The phone starts ringing right away. You answer patients' questions, schedule appointments based on urgency and, if necessary, reassure patients. While answering the phone, you keep an eye on the waiting room. You act appropriately when the emergency line rings or when a patient walks in needing acute care.
When the phone is quiet, you pick up the administrative tasks: processing referrals, requesting repeat prescriptions, handling e-consultations, registering new patients and processing medical mail. Are there care questions that you cannot resolve yourself? Then you schedule a consultation with the GP.
Do you spend all day in front of the computer and phone? Definitely not! You regularly do your own consultations, during which you perform actions such as injections, blowing out ears, doing ECGs, taking blood pressure, wound care, urine testing and removing stitches. You will also assist the GP with minor interventions. You do all this with care.
By the end of the day, the waiting room is empty and the phone is silent. You clean up and make sure everything is ready for the next day. Then you end the working day with a 'What went well?' moment. Together with your colleagues, you look back on the highlights of the day so that you go home feeling satisfied.
